St. Timothy’s Tennis Club Celebrates 65 Years

Back in 1955 Grace Hobbs said ‘we need to clean up those weeds and trash piles on those fine old tennis courts’, according to her daughter Torie. Several individuals shared her enthusiasm.

In May of 1956, the Herald Argus announced that five tennis courts would be refinished by June if enough residents showed an interest. The vestry of the church chartered the organization to be known as the St. Timothy’s Tennis Club. To this day, we still owe the church a big thank you for their continued cooperation in enabling us to survive all these years.

In June of 1956, the Argus announced the tennis club would officially open with an exhibition match featuring local players. The 1959 By Laws listed the following member fees; family $23, adults $18 and juniors $12.

St Tim’s has been going strong ever since—for 65 years. We are a friendly little club that welcomes all and accommodates all levels of play.

To celebrate this milestone, the Board has initiated several new member benefits:

• It introduced new membership fee categories as way to increase membership and make tennis more accessible to Marylanders of all ages. New adult members may now join for $200, families $300 and a new junior/millennial (up to age 35) membership category for $100.
• We are organizing Open House welcome events on Memorial Day, the Fourth of July and Labor Day
• We are scheduling hitting clinics and lessons for juniors and adults

You can find every kind of play at our Club. Some of our members participate in competitive league play. We also have friendly, arranged intra-club matches and, of course casual, ‘anytime’ play among friends. Our soft, well-maintained Har-Tru courts are easier on the joints than hard courts.
